Did you know that ...
- Every three seconds, someone needs blood.
- Every minute, patients use more than 36 units of blood or blood products.
- Every day, 40,000 units of blood are used throughout the country.
Blood donated at Indiana Blood Center blood drives goes to provide blood and blood products to help meet the needs above for more than 60 hospitals in 29 central Indiana counties. Indiana Blood Center needs at least 550 units of blood to be collected each day in order to adequately supply these hospitals. The assistance that blood drive leaders and volunteers provide in organizing blood drives and recruiting donors is an essential part of maintaining an adequate blood supply.
Faith Community Center, in partnership with IBC, hosts several blood drives each year to help meet this need. Donors must be 17 years old (16 year old donors may donate with a signed parental consent form provided by Indiana Blood Center), must weigh at least 110 lbs. and be in good health, free of current infection. Walk-ins are accepted, but appointments are recommended and by making and keeping an appointment, individuals qualify for participation in the new donor rewards program called DonorPoint. DonorPoint allows blood donors to receive points for each appointment made and kept. The points can then be used at the online store www.donorpoint.org to receive gifts and prizes.
