II. Definition of submission:

The Greek word for submission is a military term. It means to place in proper order or to be ranked under.

What are roles or relationships where submission occurs?

III. Principles of submission:

A. Key Passage: Ephesians 5:21-24, 33

B. Biblical submission is NOT:

  • A concept defining womanhood
  • A degrading idea
  • An excuse to not think or talk
  • An excuse to be passive
  • A position of inferiority

C. Biblical submission IS:

  • God’s plan for function and order
  • My responsibility
  • Continuous
  • Mandatory
  • Extensive
  • A reflection of our love for God
  • A positive concept
  • A blessing!

Summary: Philippians 2:1-11

Submission is working as a united team--striving for unity, not autonomy. Submission is humbly putting someone else's needs and concerns before mine, and then doing something to help that person. Submission is being like Christ. Living for a purpose far bigger and grander than myself!
