6th Grade

WHAT’S SPECIAL ABOUT 6th GRADE?

During this last year in elementary school, 6th grade reinforces individual and collective leadership abilities by providing the opportunity to serve on the 6thGrade Student Council. Student Council members are chosen through written essay applications, peer voting, teacher discussion, leadership skills, peer and teacher relationships, and by considering their overall character and reputation. Council members help lead chapels and promote special events, learning to become better servant-leaders based upon Christ’s perfect model of leadership.

BIBLICAL FOUNDATIONS

During the first semester, the 6th grade uses God’s Word to study how to interact with others in a Biblical manner, focusing on being peace-makers rather than peace-breakers. During the second semester, the curriculum focuses on studying the nature and character of our Creator.

CURRICULUM OVERVIEW

Math: 6th grade Math provides a comprehensive education for students’ complete conceptual understanding. Students’ mathematical understanding begins with computation, and moves into mathematical reasoning, rationality, and comprehension. Students focus not only on state objectives and goals as assessed by the ISTEPs, but also on how mathematics points to a God of order.

Bible: During the first semester, the 6th grade uses God’s Word to study how to interact and communicate with others Biblically, and to handle problems according to God’s Word. During the second semester, students learn and study the various names of God as presented in Scripture, gaining a better understanding of who God is and how much He cares for them

Language Arts: This area encompasses English, Writing and Reading. 6th graders review and further develop the correct use of grammar in written and oral communication. They practice clear and effective writing skills, develop study and reference skills, and improve listening and speaking skills. A portion of assessment will represent their comprehension of various novels, stories, and poems that are read and discussed throughout the year. This reading material will also help build character and discernment, and will foster an appreciation for literature in general. Language Arts also gives opportunities for journaling, drama, and creativity.

Spelling: Every week, the 6th graders study 20 words and definitions pulled from various subjects such as Science, History, Math, etc., to help implement concepts and further their understanding in a relevant way. The students sign weekly contracts from which they choose a variety of activities to reinforce the spellings and definitions of the words.

Penmanship: Throughout 6th grade, penmanship is considered an important aspect of students’ success. Although the world is more and more computerized, 6thgraders are held accountable for their own penmanship as it is essential for effective communication with others.  Recent studies have shown that students with fluent handwriting produce written assignments that are superior in quality and show a greater understanding of concepts. Assessments are drawn from a variety of written assignments throughout the year.

History: 6th graders “travel the globe” as they study old world history and geography. They learn about the peoples, lands, and cultures of the Eastern Hemisphere - from the Middle East where history began, through Asia, Africa, Europe, Australia, Oceania, and Antarctica. Highlights of the school year include reenacting the caste system of India and competing in their own “Greek Olympics”.

Science: Students explore God’s marvelous creation through a scientific lens. The 6th grade science curriculum combines knowledge of the world with truths from God’s Word. Not only does the curriculum extend students’ scientific awareness and prepare them for ISTEP testing, but it also guides them to a deeper understanding of their Creator and Sustainer.

PE, Library, Music and Art: 6th graders enjoy a variety of opportunities in each of these special areas.

TECHNOLOGY USE

Students visit the computer lab several times a week. During lab time, students use educational websites and do activities to further their understanding of previously-learned concepts. From practicing spelling words to reinforcing math and science skills, students work on a variety of subjects using technology.

In the classroom, the teacher uses a document camera to give students better views of certain materials. Other technology includes projectors, Think Central, Study Island, and Discovery Education’sUnited Streaming videos. The school itself has purchased a Smart Board, which is available to all teachers for classroom use.

RELATIONSHIPS & FRIENDSHIPS

Students are strongly encouraged to treat others as they want to be treated. The class implements Fabulous Friday Foursomes each week to encourage students to sit and talk with others with whom they don’t normally spend as much time. The goal is to teach students to be comfortable meeting new people, to treat others respectfully, to build a better sense of community within the elementary school, and to learn to reach out to those in need.
