The Stewardship of Our Outreach

Dr. Steve Viars November 18, 2012 2 Corinthians 5:

3 aspects of being a faithful ambassador for Christ

I. The Nature of Your Calling

A. We are ambassadors for Christ

1. Growing in spiritual maturity

ambassador – Greek word presbeuomen

Matthew 6:33 - But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

2. Living in a foreign land

Philippians 3:20 - For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ;

3. Representing a marvelous king

2 Corinthians 5:20 - ambassadors for Christ

4. Proclaiming a unique message

B. With a focus on eternity

1. Which puts our suffering in perspective

2 Corinthians 4:17 - For momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison,

2. Which gives us confidence for today because of the hope for tomorrow

2 Corinthians 5:8 - we are of good courage, I say, and prefer rather to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord.

3. Which is an opportunity for us to please our King

2 Corinthians 5:9 - Therefore we also have as our ambition, whether at home or absent, to be pleasing to Him.

4. Which prepares us for the Judgment Seat of Christ

2 Corinthians 5:10 - For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.

II. The Significance of Your Calling

A. God is making an appeal through you

2 Corinthians 5:20 - as though God were making an appeal through us…

Galatians 2:20 - I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.

B. God is worthy of respectful fear

2 Corinthians 5:11 - Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade men, but we are made manifest to God; and I hope that we are made manifest also in your consciences.

Proverbs 1:7 - The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Hebrews 10:31 - It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

Romans 1:16 - For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

C. God is worthy of a bit of fanaticism

2 Corinthians 5:13 - For if we are beside ourselves, it is for God…

III. The Intensity of Your Calling

A. We're begging on behalf of Christ

2 Corinthians 5:20 - We beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God

B. Because the love of Christ controls us

2 Corinthians 5:14 - For the love of Christ controls us, having concluded this, that one died for all, therefore all died;

C. Because new life is available in Him

2 Corinthians 5:17 - Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.

2 Corinthians 9:6-15 - Now this I say, he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that always having all sufficiency in everything, you may have an abundance for every good deed; as it is written, “He scattered abroad, he gave to the poor, His righteousness endures forever.” Now He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness; you will be enriched in everything for all liberality, which through us is producing thanksgiving to God. For the ministry of this service is not only fully supplying the needs of the saints, but is also overflowing through many thanksgivings to God. Because of the proof given by this ministry, they will glorify God for your obedience to your confession of the gospel of Christ and for the liberality of your contribution to them and to all, while they also, by prayer on your behalf, yearn for you because of the surpassing grace of God in you. Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!
