You are Blessed

Greg Wetterlin January 21, 2024 Ephesians 1:1-14
Outline

1 Corinthians 3:10-15 - According to the grace of God which was given to me, like a wise master builder I laid a foundation, and another is building on it. But each man must be careful how he builds on it. For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any man builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each man’s work will become evident; for the day will show it because it is to be revealed with fire, and the fire itself will test the quality of each man’s work. If any man’s work which he has built on it remains, he will receive a reward. If any man’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.

3 reasons to give priority to developing a lifestyle that worships our heavenly Father

“In the Greek, verses 3-14 comprise one sentence and encompass the past, present, and future of God’s eternal purpose for the church. It is Paul’s outline of God’s master plan for salvation. In 3-6a we are shown the past aspect, election; in 6b-11 we are shown the present aspect, redemption; and in 12-14 we are shown the future aspect, inheritance. Within God’s master plan of salvation is every believer who has or will ever trust in God and be saved. As it is sometimes expressed, history is simply the outworking of “His story,” which has already been planned and prewritten in eternity. This passage can also be divided into three sections, each of which focuses on a different Person of the Trinity. Verses 3-6a center on the Father, verses 6b-12 center on the Son, and verses 13-14 center on the Holy Spirit. Paul takes us to the very throne room of the Godhead to show the greatness and the vastness of the blessings and treasures that belong to those who are in Jesus Christ.” (John MacArthur, Ephesians, pp. 5-6)

“Blessed be the God and father of our Lord Jesus Christ…”

“Such gracious truth is introduced appropriately by praise to the One who has made such provision: Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. From eulogeō (blessed) we get eulogy, a message of praise and commendation, the declaration of a person’s goodness. Because no one is truly good but God (Matt. 19:17), our supreme eulogy, our supreme praise, is for Him alone. Goodness is God’s nature. God the Father not only does good things, He is good in a way and to a degree that no human being except His own incarnate Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, can be. Consequently from Genesis to Revelation, godly men, recognizing the surpassing and humanly unattainable goodness of God, have proclaimed blessing upon Him. Melchizedek declared, “Blessed be God Most High” (Gen. 14:20). In the last days, “every created thing which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all things in them” will be “heard saying, ‘To Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, be blessing and honor and glory and dominion forever and ever’ ” (Rev. 5:13). Nothing is more appropriate for God’s people than to bless Him for His great goodness. In all things—whether pain, struggle, trials, frustration, opposition, or adversity – we are to praise God, because He is good in the midst of it all. For that we praise and bless Him.” (John MacArthur, Ephesians, p. 7)

Matthew 5:16 - Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

I. Praise God because of the Immaterial Nature of Many of His Blessings to Us

v. 3 - “spiritual” blessings

A. We often overvalue material blessings and realities and organize our lives around them

1 Timothy 6:17 - Instruct those who are rich in this present world not to be conceited or to fix their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly supplies us with all things to enjoy.

B. Followers of Jesus can/should learn to emphasize and prioritize the spiritual nature of our existence

1 Corinthians 2:14-15 - But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised. But he who is spiritual appraises all things…

Matthew 10:28 - Do not fear those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

II. Praise God because of the Comprehensive Character of Many of His Blessings to Us

v. 3 - “Every” spiritual blessing

A. Our 60th anniversary provides a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our sufficiency in Christ

John 1:15-16 - John testified about Him and cried out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.’” For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace.

John 19:30 - Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.

Colossians 1:13-19 - For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities – all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything. For it was the Father’s good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him…

“As Christians, we live at a strata for which human wisdom cannot provide resources. Our ability to live the Christian life is from God alone. And when it comes to spiritual matters, all we need to know is revealed in God’s Word and ministered to us by His Spirit. We needn’t look elsewhere. One of the Old Testament names of God is El Shaddai, meaning “the All-Sufficient One.” It is a name rich with meaning. Those who worship Him in Spirit and in truth find Him adequate for every necessity of life. They do not need any supplementary experience, a stronger dose of His redemption, or any other spiritual or emotional accoutrements. God has given to every believer abundant grace that is utterly sufficient to fulfill our deepest longings, our most intense cravings, our most profound needs – every human requirement.” (John MacArthur, Our Sufficiency in Christ, p. 261)

B. Learn to rejoice in your spiritual blessings

1. A plan for us from eternity past

Romans 8:28-29 - And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren…

2. New life in Him

Romans 6:4 - Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.

3. The indwelling Spirit of God

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 - Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.

4. The privilege of prayer

John 15:8-9 - My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples. Just as the Father has loved Me, I have also loved you; abide in My love.

5. Access to and ability to understand God’s Word

John 16:13-15 - But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you. All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you.

III. Praise God because of the Divine Location of Many of His Blessings to Us

v. 3 - in the heavenly places in Christ

A. This is why they have sustained our church family for 60 years

B. This is why our anniversary can remind us to set our minds on “things above” and therefore grow in personal and corporate holiness

Colossians 3:1-4, 15-17 - Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory…. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful. Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God. Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.

If you could choose someone who would bless you in some way, what kind of person would you want that to be?

When you pause to think about it, there are a number of different ways to answer that…

1. For example, you might say – I would want it to be someone wiser than me…because I might ask for something that only provided short term gratification…

  • But a wise person might have a better idea of what kind of blessing would be best for me long term…
  • I think we could all agree to that one – if we were able to choose the person who would bless us…wisdom would be a key characteristic…

2. You could also answer – someone who knows me well…

A well-intended gift that doesn’t truly meet a need wouldn’t be much of a blessing…

  • A wise fisherman might think what you really need is an expensive rod and reel combination…because it will last you the rest of your life…
  • And in your case, that might really be true because you don’t like fishing so you’ll never even take that blessing out of the package…
  • You need someone who doesn’t just know life in general…but someone who knows you individually…so the blessing truly meets a need…

3. At some point we would also have to talk about resources…

If a person came up to you and you knew they had very little financial wherewithal yet they wanted to provide some sort of material blessing to you…that would be kind…it would be a sweet thought…

  • But you wouldn’t expect much because there just isn’t much capacity…
  • On the other hand if Warren Buffet or Elon Musk contacted you and said they wanted to provide something for you…that might result in an entirely different level of blessing…

So if the question is – if you could choose the kind of person who would bless you, what would characterize them…

- Wisdom, and intimate knowledge, and capacity would rank fairly high on the list…

The Word of God teaches that every follower of Jesus Christ has been blessed…

- That’s part of our identity…part of our existence as redeemed children…

- And who is it that’s doing the blessing?...

- God Himself…

- friend, if there has been a definite time in your life where you admitted your sin, and you came to God in repentance and faith and trusted Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord…you are blessed…you are blessed by God Himself…

With that in mind, please open your Bible this morning to Ephesians chapter 1…page 150 of the back section of the Bible under the chair in front of you…our church’s theme this year is Building on Our Heritage

We’re celebrating our 60th anniversary…and in part thanking the Lord for the incredible ways that He has blessed and sustained us…along with thinking carefully about what it means to build on that foundation…so not just “our heritage”…or even “celebrating our heritage”, but building on our heritage…

You know, God’s people have always been cautioned about how we build…

One classic passage where Paul uses this metaphor is…

1 Corinthians 3:10–15 - According to the grace of God which was given to me, like a wise master builder I laid a foundation, and another is building on it.

We’re in a similar situation, in which the Lord has blessed our church family with a sixty-year heritage that is quite remarkable…and a clear testimony of His sustaining grace…

The question before the house now is – what does it look like to build on that heritage in a way that honors the Lord in the days ahead?...

If you were here last week, you may recall Pastor Brent Aucoin sharing about how Ephesus was a great, wealthy, magnificent city. And how many people responded in the city to the gospel by burning their books that had to do with the magic arts and divination. And the sum of the total that the books that they burned came to 50,000 pieces of silver. So it was a remarkable response!

But Pastor Aucoin also reminded us of the warning that was given to the church at Ephesus in the book of Revelation. Revelation was probably written 30–40 years after the church at Ephesus came to be.

  • Think about the time difference between our church of 60 years old and the Ephesians around 30-40 years old...certainly it is God’s grace to our church to make it to 60!
  • But we do not want to presume on God’s grace and the wonderful heritage that our church has. We want to be careful how we build on that heritage.

That’s why we are working our way verse by verse through the book of Ephesians this year…and in these early weeks, we are thinking about “Remembering Our Identity as One in Christ.”

Let’s read verses 1-14 and then focus in on the wonderful truth of verse 3

[read Ephesians 1:1-14]

This morning we’re talking about how You are Blessed…and with the time we have remaining, let’s zero in on verse 3 along with a number of parallel passages in God’s Word to find Three reasons to give priority to developing a lifestyle that worships our heavenly Father.

Before we jump into those reasons, a quick note on how we are going to preach the verses that we just read. We’re planning on moving through these verses slowly. Much more slowly than we often do.

  • So as I said we are going to be looking just at verse 3 this morning. And it will take us up to Easter in March to get through the first chapter of Ephesians.

Part of the reason we are going to move through this slowly is because of the richness of this passage.

Another reason we want to go slow, is because in these first 14 verses there are some really, really important truths that are so critical and foundational to what it means to be a Christian that we want to make sure every person in our church really understands them.

  • God has blessed our church with lots of new members new folks coming, and so we want to make sure that these basic, critical truths that the apostle Paul hits in these verses are really understood by every person in our church family.
  • This is very important for newer believers of course. But for those in our church that have been believers for many years, being reminded of these things is incredible important as we look to the future as a church and individually.

Here’s how John MacArthur describes this truth packed opening to Ephesians:

Hopefully that gives you a taste of the spiritual feast that is set before us in Ephesians 1. We are going to take our time, because we want to linger in the throne room of the Godhead to gaze upon the greatness and vastness of God, that has been expressed in his gratuitous blessings towards us!

The sentence that opens the door to the throne room of the Godhead for us is, “Blessed be the God and father of our Lord Jesus Christ…”

MacArthur goes on to explain…

MacArthur’s point that no one is good but God means that he is worthy of our supreme eulogy, our supreme praise. And like the end of his quote, that means it is right for God’s people to bless and praise him in all things—including pain, struggle, trials, frustration, opposition or adversity.

So practically speaking, what does this look like?

Well, when we’re talking about praising or blessing God as supreme and praising God in all things, we are talking about worship.

  • Worship is often a word that easily gets divorced from all of life and comes to only describe quote un quote, “Religious activity.”
  • But when the Bible talks about worship, it is talking about far, far more than just what you do at church.

That’s why Jesus says that the great commandment is “Love the Lord your God with ALL your heart, and ALL your soul, and ALL your mind and ALL your strength.” Worship entails all of you, at every point throughout the day.

Here’s an example that brings this home a little more.

  • If your married, I’m assuming your spouse expects you to love them even when they are not around you. Meaning, if you’re at work or at a store, your spouse expects you to not be looking lustfully at others, flirting and certainly not engaging in any kind of sexual activity with others.
  • It doesn’t matter if you are kind when your spouse is around, and thoughtful, and loving when they are around, if you just go do all kinds of unfaithful things when they aren’t around.

It’s the same with the Lord. To love the Lord with everything, means to love and worship him in the church, outside of the church, in your home and outside your home, at work and away from work, with your finances, time, entertainment choices and so forth.

So a key question is how do you know what you worship?

  • Well, what you worship will occupy your thoughts. What you find to be supremely good, will pull your thoughts. So what is it that your mind tends to drift to? Does it always drift to, “I want a break, I just want to be entertained?” “Does your mind drift towards thinking about how you can get the attention of others, and following your own posts on social media to see how many likes and comments you get?”
  • No only will your mind drift towards what you supremely worship as good, but your lips will also give praise to what you truly believe is good.
  • The bible clearly teaches, out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks (Luke 6:45).
  • If we believe the doxology, which many of us have sung since we were young, “Praise God form whom all blessings flow—” if we really believe that, then all throughout the day our lips should be offering up praise to God for the blessings that are flowing to us!

That’s how a verse like Matthew 5:16 practically happens in the lives of God’s people.

Matthew 5:16 - Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

Well, all of that really begs the question—“What do you worship? What do you praise and bless as being supremely good?”

Verse 3 gives us Three reasons develop a lifestyle that blesses and praises and worships our heavenly Father above everything!

The first reason is...

I. Praise God because of the Immaterial Nature of Many of His Blessings to Us

v. 3 describes these blessings as...

v. 3 - “spiritual” blessings

There is no getting around the obvious reality that we live in the most prosperous nation on the planet. And that prosperity certainly has an effect and a pull on us...Jesus even told said after the rich young ruler went away sad, because he didn’t want eternal life more than he wanted to keep his stuff, “that it is hard for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven.”

The point is...

A. We often overvalue material blessings and realities and organize our lives around them

Now it’s important to note 1) that we certainly are not prosperity gospel people around here, meaning that if you love God he is going to make you health, wealth and prosperity. But 2) we are not poverty gospel people either.

  • Poverty gospel means, that the material stuff and world is bad and that there is inherent blessing in being poor.

We believe that God blesses people material and we should praise and worship God for those blessings! Part of praising and blessing God is enjoying what he has given.

But we—we as rich American’s really need to be carefully that we don’t hear “enjoy what God has given as an excuse to overvalue and organize our lives around material things!

1 Timothy 6:17 - Instruct those who are rich in this present world not to be conceited or to fix their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly supplies us with all things to enjoy.

And so much of Scripture emphasizes that if God has blessed you, then we should bless others...

Hebrews 13:16 - And do not neglect doing good and sharing, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.

Acts 20:35 - ...remember the words of our Lord Jesus, how himself said, “It is more blessed to give than receive.”

Think about the capital campaign and the school expansion or the barn at Restoration. Many, many folks who are giving to the capital campaign do not have children at the school and definitely the majority of people will never be at Restoration, or even have a family member at Restoration. So why give to those things?

Because if the Lord has blessed you with material things, it is more blessed to give than receive, and because of the incredible vastness of the SPIRITUAL blessings that we have been give.

And...

B. Followers of Jesus can/should learn to emphasize and prioritize the spiritual nature of our existence

Paul said it this way to the Corinthians...

1 Corinthians 2:14-15 - But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised. But he who is spiritual appraises all things…

That’s what we are trying to do this morning...spiritually appraise things. We do not want to appraise physical/material things over the spiritual.

You may remember Jesus’ teaching to his disciples in Matthew 10 where he was trying to help them understand the priority of the spiritual over the physical when he told them,

Matthew 10:28 - Do not fear those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

That’s wise counsel for us as well…too often we get all concerned about what someone might be able to do to some material or physical aspect of our existence…all the while failing to worship God for the spiritual blessings we enjoy that can never be taken away…

So practically speaking, how can we go about seeking to become more spiritually minded? We have to acknowledge that this world, the culture, our sinful flesh and Satan are working really hard to make sure we become more materially minded and less spiritually minded. So we need to be working at this consistently, but how?

  1. For followers of Jesus Christ, there is no way you’re going to grow more spiritually minded without consistently, daily feeding on the bread and sustenance of God’s Word.
    1. If you talk with longtime followers of Jesus Christ, and you ask them what is one of the most precious and important habits that has helped you remain faithful to the Lord, I’m certain that you will hear them say, “Daily time in the Word of God.”
    2. For me personally, when I wake up in the morning, my goal is to get as quickly as I can from my bed to the chair where my Bible is.
    3. Those daily morning times in God’s Word are so important and precious.
    4. They are also critical to help me do not set the mind on the flesh which is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit which is life and peace. That’s Romans 8:6.
    5. So if a regular time in God’s word isn’t part of your regular routine, I would encourage you to make that change. Get with one of your service pastors or your deacon or ABF teacher, because we would love to help you develop that kind of spiritual discipline.
  2. If you want to grow more spiritually minded...ask God!
    1. James 4:3 says that we do not have because we do not ask...
    2. This gets back to the fruit of our lips, reveals what we worship...do use our tongues to communicate to God that we actually want to grow more spiritually minded?
    3. So ask God to help you see things there spiritual eyes...to walk by faith and not by sight.
  3. Build friendships with spiritual people...Paul was quite clear in 1 Cor. 15:33...”Do not be deceived, bad company corrupts morals.”
    1. Scripture also gives creedance to opposite being true, that good friends can help you grow.
    2. 2 Timothy 2:22 says, “Now flee from youthful lusts and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.”
  4. I’m not much of a music person...but there are times when singing the truths of God is about all that I can do to get my heart back in line!
  5. Those 4 are all positive inputs...and the positive inputs are critical...but there is also the issue of avoiding negative inputs that encourage fleshly thinking and living.
    1. So you need to avoid entertainment choices that encourages you to indulge the flesh and love the material things of this world.

There is more we could add to that list. But if you are serious about growing to be more spiritually minded, then those 5 things can really benefit you this year if you take those seriously.

So the first reason we should bless God is because of the immaterial nature of his blessings...they are blessings that will last beyond this physical life and world!

A second reason to bless and worship God is because of the comprehensive character of many of his blessings to us...

II. Praise God because of the Comprehensive Character of Many of His Blessings to Us

v.3 not only highlights the spiritual nature of the blessings, but also notes how we have EVERY...

v. 3 - “Every” spiritual blessing

A. Our 60th anniversary provides a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our sufficiency in Christ

The reason that Kossuth Street could take such a huge step of faith was because they believed they already had everything they needed in Christ…

And the reason those five families could step out in faith is because they too believed they already had everything they needed in Christ…

This is a very important emphasis in Scripture…

John MacArthur wrote a wonderful book back in 1991 called Our Sufficiency in Christ. Here’s a quote form the epilogue:

Paul is emphasizing the sufficiency that we have in our God by telling us that we have “EVERY spiritual blessing”.

Ask yourself this question,

  • (+) Do you live your life out a place of abundance and sufficiency because of what God has blessed you with?
  • (-) Do you live your life out of a place of inadequacy, and always needing yourself, so you never have anything to give?

If it’s true that God has given every spiritual blessing then we should be living out of abundance...but we all need to help focusing on what we’ve been given...so we need to...

B. Learn to rejoice in your spiritual blessings

Now a really good question to ask at this point would be, “What are these spiritual blessings?”

  • We do need to know that, and while Paul doesn’t tell us every single one, he does go on in this passage to highlight specific blessings that should help us BLESS GOD.

But because we are choosing to go through this passage slowly and zero on individual verses, I’m purposely trying to avoid the specific content and blessings that Paul talks about in the following verses.

Subsequent sermons will unpack those specific blessings, so I’m trying to avoid stealing their thunder if you will...

But let me answer what those blessings are in general terms...

  1. A plan for us from eternity past

This is very significant, that I would encourage after the sermon, later this week to spend time pondering. Do not think of your spiritual blessing simply in terms of what occurs during your natural like of 80 years, or however long you live.

  • God’s blessing towards us go into eternity in the future. And in fact, many of the God’s promises that we cling to, we won’t actually see in this physical life. Which means, if I’m going to rejoice in spiritual blessings, I have to see my life in terms of eternity!
  • While thinking of eternity in heaven and beyond this life might be challenging for us, there is also the issue of thinking about God’s blessing towards us before we were created!
  • Ephesians 1:4 highlights the doctrine of election which points to God’s plan to bless us from eternity past...or as the text says, “Before the foundation of the world...”
  • Now, we realize that election can be controversial, but as we’ll explain next week, there is nothing to fret about or get upset over...it’s part of God’s intention from eternity past to bless his children!

Two of the most important verses in the Bible and a bread and butter passage for us around here is:

Romans 8:28-29 - And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren…

Please pause and ponder that blessing – that before the foundation of the world – the God of heaven and earth, fully aware of all your weaknesses and failures and sins past, present, and future – desired to have a personal relationship with you…

2. New life in Him

Romans 6:4 - Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.

We’re not a perfect group of people by any stretch…but there are a lot of good people here…why?...because of the life-changing impact of the spiritual blessings we enjoy in Christ

How did this campus come to be?...how did anything that we have come to be?...brothers and sisters walking into the throne room of God and asking for it…

  1. Access to and ability to understand God’s Word

While there may be some senses in which this passage had special application to the apostles, the general principles certainly apply to us…

That’ only 5 blessings...that’s not even scratching the surface of the extent and comprehensive nature of his blessing towards us...do have any doubt that God has blessed you with every spiritual blessing?

  • If we believe that, then what kind of people should we be?
  • We should be people that are regularly blessing God...both privately when no one is looking, and publicly when others are watching.

The 3rd reason to worship and bless God is...

III. Praise God because of the Divine Location of Many of His Blessings to Us

Verse 3 gives us two important locations for these blessings...first they are in the heavenly places, and second, they are in Christ.

v. 3 - in the heavenly places in Christ

We are going to see the phrase “in Christ” and “in Him” showing up in our study through Ephesians. That is such a significant phrase that it’s important to pause and unpack that.

Friends, we have a God who blesses his people. We have a God who lavishes blessing on his children. But that blessing is found “in Christ.”

  • There is no blessing from God apart from Christ.
  • The promise of the Christ—which is the Greek/NT word that is used to describe the promise of the Messiah—it goes all the way back to the beginning...

In Genesis 1:28 when he created man, the text says, “And God blessed them.”

But in Genesis 3, Adam and Eve, whom God created and blessed, chose to reject the blessing of God and go after their own blessing. But in their disobedience, rather than finding blessing they found the curse.

And the story all the way from Genesis 3 when man rejected the blessing of God, God initiated how he would restore mankind to a place of blessing. God has been methodically working to bring about blessing for mankind since the very beginning. But that blessing is only found for those who are “in Christ.”

  • Because there can be no blessing from God toward sinful, rebellious people. And that is the amazing mystery of God’s grace and love in Jesus Christ.
  • Somebody had to take on the curse of death for our sins...because God wanted to bless his creation so badly, he was willing to take the curse of death on himself in Christ so that anyone who would confess their wickedness and sin and trust in Christ’s sufficient, sin atoning death on the cross would be...blessed as Ephesians 1:3 says...WITH EVERY SPIRITUAL BLESSING.

If you haven’t ever trusted in Christ...can I ask you, “Why not?”

  • In yourself, you are sinner and you will receive the rightful judgment and curses for your sin against a holy, good God.
  • But “IN CHRIST”...God tells us that HE the father made HIM (Jesus) who knew no sin to be sin so that we might become the righteousness of God!
  • “IN CHRIST” you can have EVERY SPIRITUAL BLESSING.

If you have questions about that, your pastors would love nothing more than to help you understand how you can KNOW that you are blessed in Christ.

Secondly, these blessings are IN THE HEAVENLY PLACES...that means that nothing in this life, on this earth, can threaten or steal any of those blessings!

It’s like Jesus said in Matthew 6:19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal;

This is why they have sustained our church family for 60 years

As a church we’ve had to endure a few attacks over the years…

Not everyone in our town loves the fact that we are a Bible believing church…not that we have any desire to force/impose those beliefs on anyone else…but we’re certainly not ashamed of the gospel for the way we live and the message we proclaim…

So there have been a few attacks…but that could never be successful, why?...

Because these blessings aren’t located on earth…they are locked away…secure in the heavenly places…and grounded in the Person and work of Christ…and Christ alone…

This is why our anniversary can remind us to set our minds on “things above” and therefore grow in personal and corporate holiness

Perhaps a good way to conclude what we’re studying in terms of additional practical application is to simply let Paul expand it like he did for the Colossians…
