Understanding the Trinity

Course description: Come and join us as we worship our Triune God and seek greater understanding of his nature revealed to us in the Scriptures. The doctrine of the Trinity is essential to the Christian faith and "nowhere else is a mistake more dangerous, or the search more laborious, or discovery more advantageous" (Augustine, On the Trinity). From this class, you will be able to explain some of the main components of a theology of the Trinity, and it will prepare you to give a biblical defense of the doctrine of the Trinity. The class will also trace the development of the doctrine of the Trinity leading up to the 5^th century so that you can appreciate how Christians defended the doctrine of the Trinity in contrast to the false teaching of their day. We will draw out some of the points of similarity and differences between these early church emphases with more recent Trinity discussions and proposals and consider implications for the Trinity on other Christian doctrines and Christian living.
