Embracing our purpose to worship the God of peace

Dustin Folden October 12, 2025 Hebrews 13:20-25
Outline

Hebrews 13:20–25 -Now the God of peace, who brought up from the dead the great Shepherd of the sheep through the blood of the eternal covenant, even Jesus our Lord, equip you in every good thing to do His will, working in us that which is pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen. But I urge you, brethren, bear with this word of exhortation, for I have written to you briefly. Take notice that our brother Timothy has been released, with whom, if he comes soon, I will see you. Greet all of your leaders and all the saints. Those from Italy greet you. Grace be with you all.

4 Key Responses to the Message of Hebrews

I. Praise the Powerful God of Peace!

A. He Has Power Over Death

Hebrews 2:9–10 - But we do see Him who was made for a little while lower than the angels, namely, Jesus, because of the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, so that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone. For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things, and through whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to perfect the author of their salvation through sufferings.

B. He Cares for His Flock

Psalm 77:20 - You led Your people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

C. His Covenant Is Eternal

Hebrews 13:20 - Now the God of peace, who brought up from the dead the great Shepherd of the sheep through the blood of the eternal covenant…

II. Live to Do His Will

A. Jesus Equips Us

Hebrews 13:20–21 - …Jesus our Lord, equip you in every good thing to do His will…

Hebrews 9:11–14 - But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things to come, He entered through the greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this creation; and not through the blood of goats and calves, but through His own blood, He entered the holy place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption. For if the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkling those who have been defiled sanctify for the cleansing of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

B. Whose Will Are You Living to Serve?

Colossians 3:23–24 - Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you serve.

III. Work for His Glory

A. He Works in Us That Which Is Pleasing to Him

Philippians 2:13 - …for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.

B. Who Gets the Glory in Your Life?

Ephesians 3:20–21 - Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen.

IV. Be Bold for the Gospel

A. Carry Out Your Mission

2 Timothy 1:7–8 - For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline. Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord or of me His prisoner, but join with me in suffering for the gospel according to the power of God…

B. Live in Community

Hebrews 10:23–25 - Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.
