Strengthening Troubled Hearts

Rod Hutton June 29, 2025 John 14:1-14
Outline

4 key ways to trust in Christ and guard our heart from trouble

I. Trust that Jesus Has Prepared Our Heavenly Home to Be With Him (v. 1-3)

A. It is plentiful

B. It is personal

John 14:2 - In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you.

C. It is prepared by Christ and required sacrifice

John 14:3 - If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also.

II. Trust that Jesus Himself Is the Way (v. 4-6)

A. We know the way because we know Jesus and what He did

John 14:4 - “And you know the way where I am going.” Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, how do we know the way?”

B. Jesus is the only way

John 14:6 - Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.”

III. Trust in Christ and Not Our Own Perceptions (v. 7-11)

A. Recognize that we trust in ourselves

John 14:7 - “If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; from now on you know Him, and have seen Him.” Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.”

B. Believe Jesus’ word about Himself

John 14:9-10 - Jesus said to him, “Have I been so long with you, and yet you have not come to know Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? “Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on My own initiative, but the Father abiding in Me does His works.

IV. Trust that Christ Has Works for Us to Do that Glorify Him (v. 12-14)

A. The works of Christ point to who He is

John 14:11 - Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me; otherwise believe because of the works themselves.

B. The works we do are to point to who Christ is and what He did

John 14:12 - Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I go to the Father.

C. Our prayers are to focus on the character of God being revealed for His glory

John 14:13-14 - Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it.
