Car Works Car Repair

Car Works provides assistance to community members who have automotive problems and are experiencing financial hardship. These individuals may have a job, pay their rent, and keep food on the table, but seldom have enough money left over for preventive maintenance on their cars - and even less for major automotive repairs.

Frequently Asked Questions

*We do not service tires, or replace large drivetrain components like engines or transmissions

How long will it take for Car Works to contact me after I submit an application?

When we are extremely booked, it may take up to 6 weeks for Car Works staff to contact you.

To find out your status on the waitlist, you can text or call - 765-449-3773

Is there an age or mileage limit for vehicles that you will service?

We have a general rule of 20 years / 300,00 miles OR conditions that make the vehicle unsuitable for service, but we will inspect any vehicle brought to us.

Can I buy a car from Car Works?

Yes, anyone is eligible to purchase a vehicle from Car Works. To find out about vehicle currently available or cars that may be for sale soon please visit our inventory page to sign up for updates.

*Car Works reserves the right to disqualify someone from being able to purchase a vehicle if we deem a misuse of the vehicles we are making available for sale - for example someone trying to purchase a vehicle from us to resell at a markup

What happens to my car if I donate it?

The intent with many vehicles that are donated is to rehabilitate and service them to make them available for purchase at a reasonable price for someone needing a new or different vehicle (this could be anyone from our community, however, we strive to make vehicles available for those we are serving or those working with partner agencies in the community)

Some vehicles may not be able to be fully serviced or repaired in order to be resold at a reasonable price. Those vehicles are sold to a few wholesalers that Car Works works with and the funds are used to support the Car Works ministry.

All donated vehicle regardless of what ultimately happens to them are used for teaching and training of students and volunteers as well as people in the community through the FCI classes offered periodically.

I am thinking about donating my car, but it has issues. Can Car Works still use it?

Yes, Car Works will take vehicles in any condition, running or not.

The only requirement is a valid title and those on the title present at signing.

Vehicles that have significant issues make great teaching and training tools as they allow opportunities for students and volunteers to learn using the vehicles with problems to learn valuable lessons about vehicle diagnostics and repairs.

All vehicles donated are ultimately liquidated to help support the ministry of Car Works, but some that may not seem very useful can make great teaching and training tools along the way.

I called or texted Car Works and haven't heard back.

Car Works will normally call you back within about 1 week depending on our availability.

Car Works will normally text you back within a couple business days. This is the quicker communication option or a good way to check in on a voicemail you left.

*we try to respond to communications as quickly as possible. However, many times we can not respond quickly due to limited staff bandwidth.

Does Car Works provide a payment plan for repairs or vehicle purchases?

For vehicle purchases no type of payment plan is offered.

For service and repairs all funds for the agreed upon repair estimate are due at or before the time of service. Car Works will take payments toward that amount until it is paid in full at which time repairs will be completed, or repairs will be scheduled, whichever is applicable.

Can I get a refund for uncompleted service?

Yes, in the event you have started paying for repairs or have paid up front and your situation changes please call Car Works at 765-449-3773 to discuss how a refund can be made.

*Items that are not refundable are the $25 inspection fee (this fee can be applied as a credit to future service if no repairs are completed) and any special order parts

*special order parts are anything purchased from certain vendors or parts from a local supplier for which there are shipping charges (shipping charges are typically built into your estimate, but in the event a refund is requested the shipping amount may be deducted from the amount to be refunded)

*any amounts that are not refundable and or due up front are gone over clearly at the signing of your repair estimate

Who does Car Works serve?

Car works is limited in staffing, and as a result is currently serving those in the 47904 zip code and those referred from agencies within Greater Lafayette.

There may be specific agency referral exceptions, and those exceptions will be decision of the Care Team and/or any referring agency.

Can I pay Car Works to work on my car as a way to support the ministry?

While this idea has been considered, at this time Car Works does not have the bandwidth and there are other legal challenges that do not allow Car Works to do repair or service for hire at this time.

How do I apply for service with Car Works?

By contacting the Care Team at the Northend Community Center:

How often can I get my vehicle inspected & serviced?

For those that qualify after meeting with the Care Team, we limit inspections to 2 times in a 12 month rolling period with 1 Service in that same period, unless the Care Team or another agency approves an exception. This allows us to serve more folks and help those we have served to become future customers of other service shops in the community.

What does it cost to get service done at Car Works?

Car Works exists to serve those in financial need with critical car repairs they cannot afford through typical means and when not having a working car may affect a family and/or job stability. Car Works asks for a $25 deposit be paid to reserve a spot in the evaluation schedule. Once the owner brings the car in at the appointed time that deposit will be applied to the costs of parts. All estimated repair costs are to be paid for up front or at the time of service. Any applicable refunds will made following repairs. Labor will be provided at no cost. Any exceptions to this will be the decision of the Care Team and/or other agencies that may help with deferred costs. *in the event an inspection is performed and no service is completed the $25 paid may be carried forward to a future inspection and service appointment.

I have the parts to fix my car. Can Car Works use them?

Car Works unfortunately does not allow customer supplied parts for a variety of reasons ranging from inability to stand behind a repair to having incorrect or bad parts out of the box etc.

*any exceptions to this policy are at the sole digression of Car Works staff

Is Car Works an ASE Certified Shop?

No. Car Works is a non-profit with much of the work being done by volunteers. Parts provided by Car Works will be warranted per manufacturer with a liability waiver on work being done signed by those being serviced.
