I. Jesus’ Supreme Ministry to His People (8:1-6)

A. Ruling at the right hand of the throne of majesty

Psalm 110:1-2 - The Lord says to my Lord: “Sit at My right hand, until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.” The Lord will stretch forth Your strong scepter from Zion, saying, “Rule in the midst of Your enemies.”

B. Ministering in the true tabernacle

Hebrews 8:5 - …who serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things, just as Moses was warned by God when he was about to erect the tabernacle; for, “See,” He says, “that you make all things according to the pattern which was shown you on the mountain.”

C. Mediating the better covenant

Hebrews 8:6 - But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, by as much as He is also the mediator of a better covenant, which has been enacted on better promises.

Hebrews 8:13 - When He said, “A new covenant,” He has made the first obsolete. But whatever is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to disappear.

D. Guaranteeing better promises

II. We Enjoy the New Covenant Blessings (8:7-13)

Hebrews 8:8b - Behold, days are coming, says the Lord, when I will effect a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah…

Hebrews 8:10a - For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel.

A. His laws into our minds and hearts (8:10)

Hebrews 8:10b - I will put My laws into their minds, and I will write them on their hearts.

B. He is our God and we are His people (8:10)

Hebrews 8:10c - And I will be their God, and they shall be My people.

C. He allows us to know Him (8:11)

Hebrews 8:11 - And they shall not teach everyone his fellow citizen, and everyone his brother, saying, “Know the Lord,” for all will know Me, from the least to the greatest of them.

D. He is merciful toward our sin (8:12)

Hebrews 8:12 - For I will be merciful to their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more.

E. He refuses to remember our sin (8:12)

III. Varied Applications of Jesus’ Present Ministry

A. Provides additional motivation to praise Jesus and remain loyal to Him

B. Explains the proper attitude toward Israel

C. Helps us understand how the Old and New Testaments fit together

D. Evidence for heavenly longings
